Setting Goals

Remember the dreams and aspirations you had as a child, back when nothing was impossible or out of reach. Some of those dreams consisted in becoming an astronaut, fireman, dancer, or even a professional soccer player. As we become adults those dreams become a little more narrow, less grand, and for some those dreams turn to dust and they focus on the hamster wheal of adulating. Instead of giving up on our dreams what we should do is set clear goals, be determined, and focus on results. Goals don’t always have to be complex and overwhelming but they need to be clear and measurable. The following five questions will help guide the goal development process.

  1. What is the result of my goal?
  2. How will I achieve my goal?
  3. What obstacles will I need to over come?
  4. How will I overcome each obstacle?
  5. When will I reach my goal?

These questions work on any kind of goal, even if that goal is to work your soccer ball juggling skills. Below is an example of what your goal plan might look like.

What is the result of my goal?

I want to juggle the soccer ball 5 times in a row.

How will I achieve my goal?

I will practice for 10 minutes every day.

What obstacles will I need to over come?

I need to make sure that my ball is properly inflated and that I make time to practice even on busy days.

How will I overcome each obstacle?

I will make sure that I have the ball inflator handy prior to my first practice, On days that the afternoon will be busy I will practice in the morning before the day starts.

When will I reach my goal?

By my first soccer game on September 8th.

When faced with obstacles, make a plan and work through them, don’t use them as an excuse to fail. Focus on results and not excuses. Keep your end result in mind; what will it look like and feel like when you reach your goal?
